In an April 2023 survey, for which the vast majority was completed before the public release of Australia’s Defence Strategic Review, we asked Australians about where the country’s defence capabilities should be focused. Four in ten (40%) say that to keep Australia safe, we should invest more in military capabilities that protect Australia close to home. A quarter (26%) believe we should invest more in military capabilities that deter potential enemies far from our shores. A significant number (34%) are unsure.
